Deep Learning Postdoc Opening

Position in deep learning 4D image processing of lattice light-sheet microscopy data at UCSD

Position description:

The 4D CELL Biology Laboratory directed by Prof. Johannes Schöneberg at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research fellow to develop deep learning-based image processing pipelines for petabytes of 4D lattice light-sheet microscopy data.

The researcher will develop highly innovative 4D (x,y,z, time) image processing techniques and software tools including compression, segmentation, and quantitative information extraction from 4D data. The goal is to obtain disease readouts in human brain organoids using live 4D adaptive optics lattice light-sheet microscopy. The researcher will be part of an interdisciplinary team of stem cell organoid biologists, pharmacologists, optical physicists, and computer scientists that are passionate about using the current technological revolutions in 4D microscopy, stem cell technology, and deep learning to positively influence human health.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor, Masters, or PhD in a related field [see below]

  • Experience in biomedical image compression/segmentation using deep learning

  • A passion for creating innovative techniques, and applying them to cure human disease

  • Demonstrated record of high-performance scientific programming with python and/or C++

  • Demonstrated record of high-quality publications in the field

  • Creative, collaborative, and innovation-focused

Highly desired qualifications:

  • Experience in brain organoid imaging, lattice light-sheet microscopy

  • Expertise in at least one additional area of computer vision, machine learning, and computer graphics (e.g., deep convolutional neural networks, object detection, tracking, segmentation, image and video compression, image and video processing, 3D geometry, SLAM, multi-view geometry, simulation, graphics rendering)

To Apply:

  • Please send your CV, the desired start date, and 5 sentences about your goals to Dr. Johannes Schöneberg (jschoeneberg@health.ucsd.edu).

About the 4D CELL Biology Laboratory

The mission of the 4D Computer Science Engineering Lattice Light-Sheet (CELL) Biology Laboratory is to accelerate the advent of 4D high content screening in live tissues. The lab is located at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) in the Department of Pharmacology which is consistently ranked among the top 5 in Best Global Universities for Pharmacology and Toxicology since 2017. Known as Biotech Beach, San Diego is known as a hub for biotechnology and medical innovations. Opportunities for cross-training and networking are enormous with several top-rank institutions (UCSD, Salk, Sanford Burnham Prebys, and La Jolla Allergy and Immunology), top-rank hospitals, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in the neighborhood.
